When should you seek out a sex therapist?

Updated: Oct 23

Sexuality is an important part of the human experience. It plays a large role in our overall well-being and satisfaction. However, like everything else, things don’t always go smoothly or according to plan. Working with a sex therapist can help address and resolve issues that are negatively impacting one’s sex life.

Here are a few scenarios when seeking out a qualified sex therapist makes good sense:

Persistent Intimacy Issues

It’s not uncommon for couples or individuals to face challenges in their intimate relationships. When these challenges don’t seem to go away, seeking a sex therapist can be very beneficial. Examples include lack of desire, difficulty achieving or maintaining arousal, or concerns related to sexual function. The cause of these issues may be psychological, physical health related, relationship dynamics, or even tied to past experiences. Sex therapists provide a safe non-judgmental space to explore concerns and offer effective approaches to improve sexual satisfaction.

Communication Problems & Emotional Disconnect

Communication breakdown or emotional disconnect greatly affect sexual intimacy. When partners cease to discuss sexual desires, boundaries, and concerns, sex therapy provides an opportunity to develop improved communication skills and – hopefully – greater emotional connection.

Past Trauma or Sexual Abuse

Past sexual trauma and abuse can result in significant challenges related to sexuality. These experiences often lead to anxiety, fear, intimacy issues, and a distorted view of sex in general. With the guidance of a skilled sex therapist, survivors can regain control over their sexuality. They can once again establish healthy boundaries and develop a positive sexual self-image.
